There has been a lot of hype about Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver Chad Ocho Cinco “Tweeting” during NFL games, but that idea was shot down rather quickly by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. The idea brought up the question about independent bands using Twitter to give their fan base a more intimate view of a live show.
Are there any benefits for musicians informing you how the crowd reaction was after performing a certain song during a live set? Or a drummer describing to its fans that his/her forearms burn after playing a song?
The bands could utilize the concept to help connect with fans who can not afford to be at the concert. They can also share pics with their fan base during a show, so it lets them be a part of the moment, which is always cherished by true music lovers.
Tweeting could also help indie bands be more interactive with the fans who are at home, as well. For instance, they could have their fans vote for the next song to be played at a live show (i.e. The first 3 votes from a certain list of songs).
Sharing the live music experience could not hurt a band or musician in any way. It would be just another way to market themselves for free and give something extra to their fans who want to know about their every move.
Nevertheless, I am sure the idea will integrate itself into the live music realm at some point. With so many applications being created for Twitter, who knows how many different ways musicians will connect with their fans using the social network.
