Los Angeles Pop-R&B Singer-Songwriter, Malynda Hale, Announces Show at GiGhive’s 616 in Kenosha

Singer Songwriter Malynda HaleThis July 2nd, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter, Malynda Hale, will be bringing her sweet soulful sound to the 616. She’ll be in Kenosha promoting her most recent album, Pieces of Me.

Earlier this year, Hale’s single Falling, written as a tribute to Leelah Acorn, landed her a top-10 finalist position in GRAMMY Amplifier—a competition sponsored by The Recording Academy and Hyundai, and curated by the likes of GRAMMY winners and nominees such as Big Sean, Lzzy Hale, and Sam Hunt.

The newest record, Pieces of Me, is Hale’s 4th studio album; produced by Kevin Porter of Flashgrove Music and Darren “BabyDeeBeats” Smith, it has been described in reviews as her most personal one yet. In a chat with Gighive, Hale opened up about what she’s learned on her musical journey so far, and dropped us a few hints on what to expect for her upcoming stop at the 616.

“When I made my first album, I had no knowledge of actual music business,” she told us. “I knew nothing about promotion and getting reviewed; instead, I simply wanted to put out music to start getting my name out there. With the first album I didn’t take time to really make it as good as it could’ve been. I was over eager.”

FoolsFest Annual Spring Arts & Music Festival in Texas: Support the Vision

A new type of arts and music festival

Foolsfest Arts and Music FestivalMusic festivals are popular events all around the world; music and art usually manage to bring people together in a very unique way, no matter what the economic or politic situation is. In Canada, music lovers can choose amongst a variety of festivals including various Jazz Festivals, the Canadian Music Week and more. Americans can enjoy Coachella and SXSW amongst others. Europeans put together such a wide variety of music festivals each year that it’s impossible to count them. However, in the last few years many music enthusiasts have started to realize that many of those festivals are more of a marketing machine put together by big corporations rather than an event bringing people together. One of those music enthusiasts is Mark Levine, of Zeitgeist Enterprises in Houston, Texas. Levine has worked in the entertainment industry for over 15 years and his resume includes some of the biggest names in rock and roll.

L.A.-based director Cutter Hodierne on the making of his Sundance Film Festival debut

Fishing without Nets

Somali modern day piratesA few years ago, stories about modern-day pirates terrorizing the waters off the Somali coast started to emerge, and eventually it led to a small media frenzy. In 2008, the world watched as rescue measures were taken to save kidnapped French couple Bernadette and Jean-Yves Delanne, who were abducted by pirates while sailing home from Australia aboard their yacht, the Carre d’As. Eventually, French Special Forces freed the couple in an operation that left a pirate dead, and six more arrested. Although this happened several thousand miles away from the Californian coast, for Los Angeles based director Cutter Hodierne, the story hit close to home.

Just before he was born, Hodierne’s parents sold everything that they owned and bought a 32-foot cutter-rigged sailboat; Cutter spent the first three years of his life sailing the South Pacific Ocean. At the time, the area was one of the first and only places one would hear about modern-day pirate activity. When reminded of the French couple, Hodierne says, “That could’ve been us.” Over twenty years later, the early memories would lay down the groundwork in what would become the short-film that introduces Sundance to Cutter Hodierne.

Coeur de Pirate The French-Canadian Singer Songwriter takes her newest album on the road

Coeur de Pirate to Play Four U.S. Shows

Béatrice Martin Coeur de Pirate Béatrice Martin will be bringing her Coeur de Pirate project to the Northeastern United States for four dates this January. Despite her performing in French, the award-winning French-Canadian singer’s fan base has been expanding internationally to English-speaking audiences thanks to her rich and highly expressive, yet accessible songwriting. On several occasions, Canada’s CBC ‘Bucky Awards’ have proclaimed Coeur de Pirate as the ‘Best Reason to Learn French’. She has been certified Platinum in Canada and Belgium, Triple Platinum in France, and Gold in Switzerland.

On her 2011 sophomore album entitled Blonde (referring not only to her hair color, but also to the French-Canadian slang term for girlfriend), Coeur de Pirate melancholic-ally evokes a sixties sound and style, and does so with impressive maturity given her twenty-two years of age.

Director Marshall Lewy’s second feature film tells the tale of washed-up rocker Lachlan MacAldonich, played by Robert Carlyle. After he is arrested for drunk driving, Lachlan is threatened by possible deportation: the only way he can avoid it is by proving that his departure would cause severe hardship on a loved one. The situation forces MacAldonich to dig up the past and face some relationships that he thought would never resurface.

GigHive’s Independent Artist Website Initiative

Ready to take the next step

At GigHive, our purpose has always been to build a network to showcase Independent artists of all types. We first went online December 7, 2007 and during that time we have altered our course somewhat, as we strived to fine tune our vision. But our goals have always remained the same.

On December 7, 2010 we at GigHive are launching a new artist website initiative that will be our number one priority as we go forward to 2011 and beyond.

gighive's independent artists website initiative

A little background

Over the past 5 years, we have witnessed explosive growth to sites such as Twitter, Facebook and the once formidable Myspace communities. But the growth of these social communities have come at a huge price as more and more artists have abandoned their own artist websites or decided to forgo the expense of owning a website entirely, opting to sign up for a free alternative instead.

At GigHive, we understand the important roles these sites play in creating a launching platform for new, emerging and established independent artists, but at the same time realize they should have never been used as a substitute. Every time we as individuals follow the leader, the consequence of these actions will be a narrowing of our choices. When we do decide to narrow the field to one, then we will have no choice.
