Journey into Tehran’s independent underground.

nooneknowsaboutpersiancatsIn his recent film, No One Knows About Persian Cats, director Bahman Ghobadi shows us a very different side of the independent music scene, one unfolding in modern Tehran under a strict and repressive government.

Near the beginning of the film, one of the main characters, a struggling musician, laments, “Here you can’t do anything. In this country, you don’t have a chance.” Sound familiar? In the Iranian capital, it is governmental control, rather than monopolistic labels and corporations, that keeps non-traditional music underground. Still, the similarities to the music scene in the western world are uncanny.

PeteFrancis_TMWAI_PR_031910Indie artist, Pete Francis, has launched his new Web site featuring tour dates, lyrics and music. On his site, Pete offers the first single “Glue” for free download.

The New York City based singer-songwriter is set to release his new album The Movie We Are In on May 18. Pete decided that a new approach was key for his next record. Instead of his usual self-produced style of album making, he uprooted his life and assembled an entirely new crew with in Los Angeles with producer Jeff Trott (right hand man to Sheryl Crow as writer and guitarist).

Francis said, “I wanted to bring a modern element into my music. When first speaking with Jeff Trott, I quickly realized he had great musical instincts and that he was getting me and he brought ideas to the table that I hadn’t imagined.”

P.O.S.’s newest album release, Never Better, shows off his signature style with a hybrid of music that conjures get-away cars, racing chariots, the pursuit of sirens, and the occasional rueful nighttime drive.

For P.O.S., genres have always been permeable and he proves it on Never BetterA free download of “Goodbye” off the album Never Better can be found here:http://is.gd/4jtbS

pimpsfinalhighresBlending a mixture of funk, dance and hip hop accompanied by latin beats, The Pimps of Joytime have created a sound that will keep you moving until the beat stops. Their eclectic debut album High Steppin’ is available now on Wonderwheel Recordings.

The independent band tears through all music barriers to generate a feeling that makes you think you are on an island alone wondering through an endless sea of people during a party that does not end.

This multi-ethnic group hits all the marks and crosses all the barriers, bridging the gap between underground funk, soul, pop, dance, afrobeat and latin, filling every song with soulful harmonies and great vibes.

nmoyalbumNightmare Of You has released their second studio album, Infomaniac, on The Bevonshire Label. The independent band will be playing an album release show at Looney Tunes on Long Island, NY today to celebrate their release.

Produced by Brian Thorn at Magic Shop studios in Manhattan, NY, this album is the band’s most altruistic, enthralling and skillful work to date.

This record has allowed Nightmare Of You (Brandon Reilly-vox/guitar, Joseph McCaffrey-guitar/vox, Michael Fleischmann-drums, Brandon Meyer-bass) the lucidity to create a more sophisticated sound.

Infomaniac, is an artfully driven aural experience – built up of synergetic instrumental measures and intense lyrics that flow brilliantly transcending one song to the next.
