Whether it’s for music, shows, announcements, etc., many do so without taking full advantage of what many search engines have to offer. And that would be how they scan and display information contained on the back-end of your website.

Hear me out… When I am searching for a new artist on the web, in most cases I usually start my search with general keywords terms, such as female dj, singer/songwriter, hip hop producer, mastering engineer, lead vocalist and so on.  Most people who search on the web use general keyword terms or phrases to find what they are looking for. So the same thing holds true when fans are searching for a particular type of artist in the general sense.

The process is overwhelming to complete an EP or full-length album for independent artists. Another difficult aspect is letting music fans know that the EP or album exists. Experts suggest that bands need to execute the basics – practice, tour and generate a fan base.

Creating a presence online is a different story. You can upload tracks to websites that generate links, so you can send the generated links to independent music blogs and post them on your websites and social media profiles. Be sure to display links to online stores where you are currently selling your music.

I spend a great deal of my spare time searching on the web for independent artist owned websites. After three years of searching and finding all kinds of great gems on the Internet, I decided to post some of my tips on helping you get your web page to stick with new visitors.

information overloadBefore I get started, you must first wrap your mind around the idea that the majority of visitors who land on your home page on the web today are inundated with an overwhelming number of: emails, texts, advertisements, status updates, applications, requests, alerts, and demands all vying for ‘me’ time. Information overload is normal for most web surfers. And this is happening every second they are browsing the web.

Just one side note before I go on: For those of you who love the cool flash intros, think twice about the loading times, because you literally have seconds before A.D.D. kicks in and your new visitors hits the back button and becomes a bounce statistic.

Independent Artists Choose to Control Your Own Online Presence and Choose the Right Path

Every now and then I will read an article that has me questioning the choices we make as artists.

This time Facebook was the topic and it was regarding a glitch in their system that was mistakenly deactivating accounts of thousands of female users. Of course, they remedied the bug. But instead of automatically reactivating the affected accounts and allowing members to sign in and go about their business as usual, they were required to fill out a form. The form required them to send an image of a “government-issued ID,” ensuring that their full name, date of birth, and photo were clear. Even after doing so, one confirmed member was still denied access (read article here).

choose your pathWTF?! The more I read about the advancement of Facebook the more I see it as an “Internet institution” opposed to a place to share images and connect with friends. Why in the hell would someone even have the balls to ask a member to issue a government-issued ID in order to sign into a $%#!*# social network account?

It’s never the right time, so why wait?

How many times have you put off a challenge, a job, a plan or an assignment and claimed you would get to it when the time was right? We all have, but a sad fact still remains: it’s never the right time and it never will be. Do it anyway, even during the tough times, you will find the endurance, the drive and the will to work under any circumstances that are occurring around you.

Right now, excuses for not working on what needs to be done is at an all time high, and it’s epidemic in the creative and entertainment fields. With fears of the shaky economy, layoffs, escalating prices and so on, putting things off has become a larger, more prevalent course of action than ever before.

The Problem

A strange equation seems to come into play when people are scared, overwhelmed, intimidated or just plain tired. They justify the reasons why they are not doing the things they know they should be in exchange for shortcutting or procrastinating. These people even convince themselves that procrastination is the right it is the way it has to be and they are doing the best they can or at least they are trying.

The Seductive, Perilous Life Of The Semi-Indie Band

producerI went to an interesting show last night. It involved five bands, all in the process of recording their first album at the same studio. The owner of the studio, who is, I guess you could say, “co-producing” the album along with the artists, suggested that they put on the showcase in order to do some live sound and video recording. If they were able to create some successful media, it could be incorporated into their album and/or EPK in various ways.

While the producer suggested a venue, along with video and sound people for the project, it was the bands’ job to book the venue, promote the show, sell the tickets, and pay the tech people. If they managed to record quality sound and video, the producer would then know just what to do with it.

The night was a big success, but of course the bands didn’t actually make any money. After the venue, technicians, and set players for solo artists were paid off, the only reward was some hopefully usable recordings. The bands had been walked through part of the process of production, however, and they were all delighted at having participated in such a professional event.

It happened a few weeks ago in Australia.  I was standing at the opening cocktail reception for APRA’s Song Summit Music Conference overlooking Darling Harbor in Sydney, and I was chatting with a perfect stranger (who it turns out is a very famous Australian musician with quite a few top 10 hits in Oz).  Noting my foreign accent he asks “What brings you here?” “I teach artists about online marketing and social media.”  I answer sheepishly, because this news is not always met with elated enthusiasm.
