2000 paintings in one gallery at one time….

Do you want to be a part of it?

For the third time, APW Gallery is presenting the largest exhibition at our new location. Last time we had over two thousand 12″ x 12″ paintings on display at our gallery.

This time we want to supass the previous and present the biggest and best square foot exhibtion in NYC.

blogger-and-wordpress-differences-logoEvery Indie music artist should think about starting a blog.

First though, a little rant. I’m always shocked by the amount of crudeness people will allow on their MySpace pages. It’s not always their own content either. In fact, usually it’s the comments other people leave on their page.

If people start dropping comments on your page like, “Yo man, ur shits smashin, check out my dope new tracks !!”, not only should you not check out their dope new tracks, but disable comments on your page altogether because your page is becoming a spam farm. If your page is attracting these types of numnuts, pretty soon you’ll be inundated with more garbage than a Mumbai slum.

happynewyearI’ll be the first to admit that New Year’s resolutions are kind of stupid. They usually involve quitting something (smoking, drinking, eating too much) that I end up doing on New Year’s Day because the party’s still on, and after that, I need my favorite vices to recover from the craziness of the holidays, and by the end of the week, I’m wondering why I bothered making a stupid resolution in the first place, and what’s so great about New Year’s, anyway?

But there is a secret to keeping a New Year’s resolution. The secret, friends, is to resolve to do something totally amazing with your new year. Don’t plan to wallow in miserable self-denial. Don’t plan to change who you are. Just plan on being completely awesome.

Doing great things is a particularly excellent plan if you’re someone whose future depends on your ability to succeed with no one cracking the whip behind you. Like, say, for example, if you’re an indie musician. Inertia can be a killer. So what better time to commit to becoming rich and famous than on January 1st?

twitter-bird-headphones-300x300If you’re an Indie music artist and you’re not already on Twitter, I really suggest you join…like, now.

Why? Because rising tides lift all boats. Twitter is a rising tide. Actually, it’s more like a tidal wave. According to the State of the Twittersphere Report, each day, 5000-10,000 new people join. It’s growing like gangbusters.

So why should you care? First of all, let me say, when it comes to understanding Twitter, people generally fall into 3 different groups.

The first group is people asking “What’s Twitter and how do I use it?” The second group is people who are already using Twitter with varying degrees of effectiveness. The third group is saying, “Wait, WTF is Twitter!?”

unmarked pathIndie artists are at a disadvantage. While there are some who will dismiss any thought of comparing themselves to other artists, I would like to offer a different perspective.

The Problem for Indie Artists

First of all, the biggest problem for indie artists is gaining exposure through unfriendly systems. The traditional systems that are in place today were built around an industry that has many layers of interdependency. These layers of interdependency are the various services that are frankly necessary to operate at higher levels. Agency, management, and promotion are only a few of these services. Some of these systems may seem “unfriendly” because they are reliant on larger publishers and labels. For the larger labels, publishers and related services, self sufficiency threatens their source of income. If we were on the opposite side of the fence, we would view it the very same way.

However, as indies, we are not on their side of the fence by definition. We are indies, which, aside from being a genre unto itself, is short for independents.

mathieupersanstudioMathieu Persan tells fans ”no need to have a record label if I have you.”

The recession has hit the music industry hard, and in many cases, the indie artist has been hit hardest of all. This week, TheBuzz spoke to Parisian songwriter Mathieu Persan about his experiences in the days since his indie label was forced to close its doors.

“It was very frustrating,” Persan says. “When you are a musician, releasing your very first LP is something very special. I had work so long and so hard on this record that it was really devastating.”

cdblankIndie or pop artists are somewhat independent artists, whose music does not comply with the trends of the common commercial music industry. Their music genre is thus, what makes them stand unique from the rest of the music fraternity.

To understand in better way, let us explore as how and why this trend of pop artists started. Indie artists started as aggressive bands during 1970s. They made music and songs for people, who shared similar ideology as theirs. The trend passed on and now, there are numerous pop artists in the music industry.

expnAfter turning on ESPN’s Sportcenter show,  I quickly noticed that the credit line of one of their montages featured independent band, Anarbor, who is signed under indie label Hopeless Records.

ESPN usually embraces the indie music movement for their EXPN action sports spectacles, but that is about it. Now they have expanded this mindset and there are many indie artists waiting line to be a part of the movement.

Could the indie music movement be quietly being embraced by the higher-ups and starting a trend that could take on pretty fast? Yes, this type of move has been used in the past, but it was very rare. Every corporation usually wants the big major label artist behind their product.

Hopeless Records is the home to indie bands such as, All Time Low, Thrice and list goes on, but who would have thought that these bands would be part of features in the mainstream media?

url2Social networking sites have become a great tool for independent bands to market their bands, but that is all they are good for. Indie bands need to realize that they need a Web site to solidify their online presence.

Having the ability to control the content on their own domain is key when trying to manage their image and marketing. Indie artists can make their own rules and do not have to follow the regulations that social networks expect them to follow.

The other aspect is indie bands ignoring their Web sites and spending more time on content on their social network profiles. Bands should keep their content fresh such as, tour dates, photos, appearances, etc., so their fans return to view anything that is new with the band.
